FAMILY STRENTHENING – May 15 2025

Strengthening families, Securing futures

Every morning, Sharmila rises early to prepare breakfast for her two children, Ramita and Roshan. As they head off to their nearby community school, she watches them with hope—dreaming of a future where they grow into confident, educated, and independent individuals. “My children are my world,” Sharmila says. “I want to be there for them, to support them in every step towards their dreams.”

Sharmila’s family is one of many supported by SOS Children’s Villages Nepal through its family strengthening programme—an initiative aimed at preventing family breakdown caused by poverty and social vulnerability.

Roshan, now in grade seven, is an enthusiastic member of his school’s child club. “I want to become a scientist in the future,” he says with a bright smile. He studies at one of the six community schools in Bharatpur where SOS Children’s Villages Nepal is implementing the ‘Promoting Educational Resilience of Schools on Equitable Access to Education’ project. One of the key focuses of this initiative is promoting child participation through vibrant and well-supported child clubs.

“With the support of SOS Children’s Villages Nepal and our teachers, we have taken part in various activities—from child rights awareness to ICT training and environmental initiatives,” Roshan shares proudly. “This year, we even organised a Children’s Day rally to raise awareness in our community.”

For Sharmila, the journey of resilience has also included livelihood support. “I received goats through the support programme,” she explains. “The business is doing well, and I have started saving for my children’s education.”

On this International Day of Families, Sharmila’s story reflects the deep bonds that hold families together—and how, with the right support, those bonds grow stronger even in the face of adversity. Through its holistic approach, SOS Children’s Villages Nepal continues to empower families like Sharmila’s—ensuring that no child grows up alone.
