A small step to help society during COVID-19

Amid the COVID-19 followed by lockdown and prohibitory orders, life have been difficulty for all groups of people especially hardest for the poor communities.  A malnourished child suckling her skinny mother who is also suffering from hypogalactia due to lack of sufficient food, a daily wages worker struggling hard to manage single meal in a day, street vendors with no saving and food explaining his/her situation are few examples of the incidents going viral in social medias these days.

Having seen all these circumstances, young people from Youth Care Bharatpur decided to raise fund and support the needy people in whichever way possible. Immediately, they posted an appeal on the Facebook page of Youth Care Bharatpur requesting the youths to voluntarily contribute from their side.

“We were aware of the pathos caused by lockdown and decided to contribute from our side. To our utmost surprise, there was flood of support. In just two hours, we could raise approximately ninety thousand rupees. This has motivated us to work for the noble cause”, says Bijay Khadka from SOS Youth Care Bharatpur.

With the money collected, young people provided support to such group of people who had lost work due to COVID-19 pandemic and therefore had no food to eat. In collaboration with a local organization, they managed two day’s lunch to 350 people. The lunch included rice, meat, vegetable and pickle. Few of them even volunteered in preparing and supplying food.

In addition to this, young people also distributed groceries to five families living in slum area. Among those families, one family had 15 members but all adults had lost job due to COVID-19 pandemic. They used to work as rickshaw puller and labourer but now stuck at home.

With the remaining sum, the young people are planning to create a permanent fund that will be utilized in humanitarian activities in future.

“I am happy that we came with the idea of supporting people who are severely affected by lockdown. When I saw small children eating joyfully, I realized the importance of every nibble of food. It has made me recognise that we don’t need anything big to support people. It could be just our small effort to bring smile in the face of people”, shares Khimlal Pandey, one of the volunteers of the programme from SOS Youth Care Bharatpur.

Mr. Bir Bahadur Pakhrin, Chairman of ward no. 12, Ratnanagar Municipality, had wholeheartedly applauded the noble deed initiated by the young people.

Similarly, this has also set an example for the young people living under the care of SOS Children’s Villages Nepal and care leavers.
