Laxmi was a participant in the Family Strengthening Programme implemented by SOS Children’s Village Dhangadhi. Through the programme, she received support in establishing a small shop, which became the turning point in her journey towards financial independence. As a single mother raising her son, now studying in Grade X, the opportunity not only strengthened her livelihood but also restored her confidence.
After successfully exiting the programme in July 2025, Laxmi continued to extend her care beyond her immediate responsibility. She welcomed her niece into her home, ensuring she could continue her education in Grade IV. Alongside this, Laxmi also looks after her mother-in-law, managing her household while balancing her role as a community leader and entrepreneur.

“Family, for me, means living together and caring for one another,” Laxmi shares. Reflecting on her journey, she adds, “A few years ago, I did not have confidence. Today, I run my own shop, I am financially independent and I can speak up without fear.”
Her hopes now are firmly rooted in the future of the children she cares for. “I want my son and niece to do well in their studies,” she says, believing that education will open doors she once had to struggle to unlock herself.
Laxmi’s story highlights how strengthening families and communities contributes to improved outcomes for children, ensuring they grow up in safe, nurturing environments with access to education and a hopeful future.
