In a continued commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity and well-being of every child and young person, SOS Children’s Villages Nepal organised the National Workshop on Strengthening Child and Youth Safeguarding 2026, a significant initiative designed to empower those at the heart of care.

Held from 23 to 26 February 2026 at Child and Youth Practitioners’ Training Centre (CPT) Kavre, the four-day workshop brought together 19 Child and Youth Safeguarding (CYS) Focal Persons from alternative care programmes. The workshop served as both a learning platform and a space for reflection, collaboration, and renewed commitment.

Building safer environments through knowledge and practice
At its core, the workshop aimed to strengthen both the understanding and practical application of safeguarding standards within alternative care and education settings. Through a carefully designed programme, participants explored critical areas such as incident management and documentation, case management processes and positive discipline approaches to address challenging behaviour and prevent peer-to-peer harm.

Sessions also focused on often overlooked but equally important aspects of care work i.e. stress management, secondary trauma and self-care. Recognising that caregivers and safeguarding focal persons play emotionally demanding roles, the workshop created space for honest conversations about resilience, emotional well-being and maintaining professional boundaries.

Learning through experience and collaboration
What made the workshop particularly impactful was its participatory approach. Facilitated by a blend of internal experts and external resource persons, each session combined technical knowledge with real-life application. Participants engaged in group work, case discussions, and reflective exercises, sharing their own experiences from diverse programme contexts.

These exchanges not only enriched learning but also fostered a sense of collective responsibility and peer support. The room became a space where challenges were openly discussed, solutions were co-created, and best practices were shared across programmes.

From reflection to action
As the workshop progressed, discussions moved beyond theory towards actionable change. Participants collectively reflected on existing safeguarding challenges and identified opportunities for strengthening systems at the programme level.

A key outcome of the workshop was the development of clear action plans: practical roadmaps that participants will take back to their respective programmes. These plans aim to ensure consistent implementation, stronger monitoring mechanisms, and sustained follow-up in safeguarding practices.

As participants return to their roles, they carry not only enhanced skills and knowledge but also a renewed sense of purpose: to uphold the rights, safety and well-being of every child and young person entrusted to their care.
