A safe place to grow: How SOS Day Care Centres are keeping families together

For Deepak, mornings once began with uncertainty. As a taxi driver and a single father, he faced an impossible question each day: how to earn a living while ensuring his young daughter was safe.

His life changed forever when he lost his wife during the birth of their second child. Grief quickly gave way to survival. Alone and overwhelmed, Deepak made the painful decision to send his newborn to live with her maternal grandparents in the village.

“I was grieving and trying to care for two young children by myself,” he recalls. “That was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.”

Hope returned when his daughter was enrolled at the SOS Day Care Centre. Open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the centre offered more than childcare—it offered reassurance.

“As a single parent, finding a place where my daughter is safe and cared for has been a great relief,” Deepak says. “I can now work a full day without worry. Knowing she is well looked after gives me the peace of mind to focus on providing for my family.”

Each evening, he watches his daughter return home with new words, new skills and a growing confidence. “I see her learning and growing—and that gives me strength,” he shares. “Even in loss, I’ve learned that we can still move forward.”

Deepak’s journey reflects the wider impact of SOS Children’s Villages Nepal’s Day Care Centres, which are a vital part of the organisation’s holistic approach to preventing child–family separation. Located in Gandaki, Bardiya, Surkhet and Itahari, the centres support families facing poverty, single-parent households, daily wage earners and caregivers of persons with disabilities.

By providing safe, reliable and high-quality childcare during working hours, the centres enable parents—especially those dependent on daily wages—to continue earning a livelihood without compromising their children’s safety and well-being.

At the heart of this initiative is a simple belief: children belong with their families whenever it is safe to do so. By easing the burden on caregivers and creating nurturing spaces for children, SOS Children’s Villages Nepal is helping families stay together, grow stronger and build a more secure future—one child, one family at a time.
