SOS Children’s Villages Nepal was possibly the first among international organizations to enter Relief Operations in the districts severely ravaged by the Big Earthquake of April 2015 and its aftershocks. We covered nine districts by mobilizing our staff members and young people as volunteers to establish and run Medical and Relief Camps for the Injured, Child Care Spaces, Distribution of Relief Materials, etc. We also ensured that affected families from the neighborhood have their basic needs such as water, rations, utensils, beddings and toiletries fulfilled and our Children’s Villages, Schools and Youth Facilities were open to the neighbors as temporary shelters. We have completed our initial survey to identify worst affected communities (and families). Nine locations have been selected to move ahead with next phase such as implementation of Family Strengthening Programmes (that includes Kinship Care and Livelihood Projects, distribution of ‘Home in a Box’, etc). Reconstruction of individual homes, schools, health post, social centers and monument (e.g. monastery) will take place in three villages (one each from Dolakha, Sindhupalchok and Bhaktapur) soon.
