All programs of the SOS Children’s Village Kavre location jointly observed the 26th SOS International Day by having a Blood Donation Programme; Welcome, Induction & Felicitation to the Existing and Prospective Local Sponsors and taking out a Peace Procession on June 20th, 22nd and 23rd respectively.
The first programme took place in the vicinity of the Girls Facility at Shantinagar, Kathmandu on which 128 people donated blood. This programme was coordinated by Mr. Binodmani Bhattarai, youth leader of SOS Youth Facility Kavre and almost all youths actively took part in to make the programme a success or donated blood themselves. Further attraction of the programme was the presence of Mr. Rajesh Hamal, one of the few celebrities of the Nepali cinema and a famous singer, Mr. Dhiraj Rai to encourage people to donate blood. This Blood Donation programme not only encouraged our youths to manage and coordinate the event successfully, it also taught them a lesson that ‘we must learn to live and work for others’.
The second programme, namely ‘Welcome, Induction and Felicitation to the Existing and Prospective Local Sponsors’ was organized in the SOS Children’s Village Kavre campus (school courtyard) and was presided by Mr. Ishwori Prasad Sharma, Project Director SOS Children’s Village Kavre and the Head of Education, SOS Nepal. The Chief Guest was Mr. Rudranath Basyal, the Chief District Officer, Kavre, and Prof Suresh Raj Sharma, the Vice Chancellor of the Kathmandu University, the Guest of Honour. Other invitees included people from all walks of life renowned in the district and elsewhere for their success in their professions or for their services to the society. Needless to say, all the members of SOS Location: Kavre were present on the occasion as the host. The team of volunteers comprised of grade 12 students, the School Prefect Council and the Creative Child Club members.
After the guests had gathered in the courtyard of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Kavre, the programme began with the singing of the national anthem and the SOS prayer. Some junior students of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Kavre presented a cultural programme comprising of songs, dances and musical presentation item in order to welcome and honour the guests. Uttam Pandey and Sujata Shrestha, two SOS youths, shed light on the role of the organization in the lives of the children similar to their situation. The sponsors and friends of SOS Kavre were bestowed certificates of appreciation for their support to the SOS organization. Mr. Ishwori Prasad Sharma, while delivering his induction speech, focused on the role of local sponsors in keeping up the good image of the organization and making SOS Nepal self-sustained. Their support, he reiterated, is significant to prove Nepali people’s ability to take care of the organization as their own. The chief guest, Mr. Rudranath Basyal, acknowledged the role played by the SOS Nepal, particularly SOS Children’s Village Kavre, for providing safe childhood to children who have lost parental care or are on the verge of losing it. He said that he would always try to help the SOS Organization personally and professionally. The Guest of Honour, the Vice- Chancellor of the Kathmandu university Prof. Suresh Raj Sharma, pointing towards a serious problem of brain drain, stated that Nepali people themselves should march ahead together for the peace, progress and prosperity of the country. The Chief Guest, the Guest of Honour and the High Valued and Corporate sponsors were felicitated jointly by Mr. Ishwori Prasad Sharma and Mr. Bhuwani Prasad Dhakal whereas the new sponsors were presented with Certificate of Appreciation. After a vote of thanks by Mr. Tulsi Chhunju, Assistant Director, SOS Children’s Village Kavre, the first day’s formal program was over. At the end of the programme, all guests visited the family houses of SOS Children’s Village Kavre where they were offered refreshments. During the programme, all guests joined the members of SOS Children’s Village Kavre family to pay tribute to Prof Dr. Hermann Gmeiner.
June 23rd started with the Peace Procession around in Banepa in which nine schools participated and competed in terms of making their presence most impressive. The procession started from Chadani Chowk, Banepa, at 7.30 AM and arrived at SOS Children’s Village Kavre at 10:30 AM. After it reached the school courtyard, it turned into a mass meeting, once again chaired by Mr. Ishwori Prasad Sharma. Mr. Bhuwani Prasad Dhakal welcomed all the participating schools and the students. The winning schools were awarded with prizes and certificates. The 2nd day’s programme formally ended at around 10.30. The Chairperson, the representative of the panel of Judges and all speakers highlighted the importance of balancing rights and responsibilities and making school environment conducive and child friendly to create better society.
The second part of the programme of June 23rd was more informal. First all children, mothers and coworkers paid homage to Prof Dr. Hermann Gmeiner by garlanding the statuette and through prayers. Afterwards, Creative Child Club Kavre conducted various interesting events for SOS Mothers and Coworkers. Winners of various games and sporting events happened in the last fifteen days were also awarded with various prizes. Youths, who proved outstanding in their studies, behavioral, social or other similar dimensions were offered memento and/or certificates of appreciation. The Day ended with a live concert from Mr. Dhiraj Rai who dedicated his songs for all children, youths and the members of the SOS Kavre family.
In hindsight, all events and programmes organized to mark the 26th SOS INTERNATIONAL DAY by the projects of SOS Children’s Village Kavre proved to be helpful to propagate the Vision, Mission and Values of the SOS Organization and to consolidate solidarity among children, mothers, teachers, coworkers and the existing and prospective sponsors of the organization. |
