Annual Sports Meet 2011 - a complete forum for every child

Endorsing the adage “Healthy mind lives in healthy body“, SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Bharatpur organised a four day long Annual Sports Meet from 26th Dec to 29th Dec 2011. As the proverb says, “Well begun is half done”, the event was graciously inaugurated by the Project Director of SOS Children‘s Village Bharatpur, Mr Bhola Nath Paudel. Students divided in four different Houses: Jupiter, Mars, Mercury and Venus had demonstrated March Past and offered salutes to the Chief Guest in the opening ceremony before the field and track events started off.

Next three days were laden with exciting field and track events. The events were designed in such a way that a student took part in at least a game but rules and regulations were similar to the Olympics. Besides the races of different distance, marathon race, relay race, high jump, long jump, shot put, tug of war, skipping race, three legged race, volleyball, and football; some new events such as stepping stone, drive the pig to destination, candle race, thread and needle, pyramid race, wheel and barrow etc added a different taste to the whole event. Female teaching staff divided themselves in pairs and enjoyed stepping stone whereas male teaching staff played an exciting volleyball match. All non-teaching staff chose Hot Potato for them.
Each day ended up with prize distribution by the Project Director of SOS Children’s Village Bharatpur, Mr Bhola Nath Paudel, lovingly called Father. The winners were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals along with the certificates.
The fourth day was remarkably different. The District Education Officer, Ramakanta Sharma was present as the Chief Guest in the closing ceremony presided over by the Project Director of SOS CV Bharatpur, Mr Paudel. Guardians also were invited for the same function.
School Principal, Mr Ganga B Gurung, in his welcome speech clarified the endeavours taken to bring out the inherent talents of students and groom their caliber. He also sought help from all the guardians and everyone concerned.
Chief Guest Mr Sharma appreciated the school activities and lauded the vital role played by SOS CVs in Nepal to uplift the status of the children who are at risk.
The chair of the programme Mr Bhola Nath Paudel who had been closely observing the scenario made a clear remark that the earth belongs truly to the bravos but not to the cowards and congratulated everyone who directly involved in the sports festival. He expected constant help from the DEO and his office in the upcoming days. He also handed the Chief-Guest a souvenir.
Four Houses were awarded The Best House of the Year, First Runner Up, Best in March Past and The Most Disciplined Shields along with cash prizes on the basis of their performance throughout the Meet. Jupiter House bagged The Best House Shield and Rs 6000 cash prize, Mars House stood the 1st runner up and won Rs 4000 while Mercury and Venus were declared The Most Disciplined and The Best in March Past respectively winning Rs 4000 cash prize each.
Intermediate and Senior Championship Trophies were the most coveted awards by individuals. These Trophies were awarded to individuals for the scores they contributed to their Houses. Muna Kafle from Intermediate Girls, YushaThapa from Senior Girls, Suraj Pyakurel from Intermediate Boys and Sampurna Shrestha from Senior Boys bagged the Championship Trophies.
Hence, Annual Sports Meet has not only proved to be a complete forum for each and every child who takes shelter at SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Bharatpur but also the most cherished moment lived at school.
