Introduction
Click to enlarge Established in 1998 in a pleasant open space of Shreekhandapur, Panauti – 2, Kavre District, Nepal; SOS Hermann Gmeiner Higher Secondary School Kavre (SOS HGHSSK) takes its name from the founder of the SOS Children’s Villages International, a not-for-profit- organization which has been extending its services for the cause of needy children around the world.  SOS Children’s Villages International  supports those children and youths who have lost parental care or are on the verge of losing it due to various reasons by offering them adequate family care and quality education. This school is one of the various projects of SOS Children’s Village Nepal; an affiliate of the SOS Children’s Villages International in Nepal.
The major purpose of this school is to offer quality and relevant education from nursery to standard 12 (management stream) to the children/youths living in the SOS
families and to the ones from its neighboring localities.  This school tries to ensure that no child is deprived of schooling and education because of his/her social and financial status, and therefore considerable number of children/youths are enrolled here under scholarship schemes.

of services it offers to its stakeholders remains a top priority. For this to happen, regular visits of the senior colleagues from SOS Children’s Villages International and SOS Children’s Villages Nepal, and sharing ideas and expertise with local, national and international experts is a regular phenomenon.  Most importantly, regular visits of Mr. Helmut Kutin, president of SOS Children’s Villages International, have been a source of inspiration and encouragement to all pupils, teachers and everyone associated with the school.

Click to enlarge We believe that education should not only support someone to receive a good job, but it must also make him/her a contributing and respectable member of his/her society.  This is only possible when the graduates of that institution possess and demonstrate social, moral and other human values (i.e. kindness, patience, perseverance, trustworthiness, helpfulness, loyalty toward one’s profession, consideration to less fortunate friends and neighbors, etc).  This is what we are working for guided by our
school motto ‘EDUCATION FOR HUMAN PERFECTION’.
Please study our details and /or pay a visit to our school and feel the difference yourself!

Principal
Vision
The vision of the school is to offer quality education for helping our students in the development of their physical, behavioral, social, emotional and, more importantly, intellectual dimensions. This school believes that education helps individuals to become self-reliant and to lead a respectable life.  Through education, the school family believes that, equity and social justice can be maintained and children from the financially and socially deprived communities can get rid of from the cycle of poverty and deprivation. We dream of a society where individuals are valued and their individual differences respected and recognized. The school believes that education must help children and youth in order to become constructive, industrious, innovative and competent citizens.
Mission
The mission of the school is to promote the development of affirmative social norms and values, peace, professional knowledge, critical thinking skills, communication, interpersonal skills and technical skills among its stakeholders (i.e. students, teachers & parents).  This is also to support students integrate socially, economically, politically and culturally by developing positive human qualities. The school system works in creating such an organizational culture which prepares and encourages competent professionals to offer high quality, up-to-date and relevant contributions in primary, secondary and tertiary level of education.
Objectives
Key objectives of the school are:
  • To offer basic to higher secondary level (Nursery – standard 12, management stream) education to our students with a view to promoting their relevant knowledge and skills in order to ensure that they are properly equipped to meet their basic and contemporary socio-economic, linguistic, scientific and educational needs;
  • To prepare higher secondary level students for tertiary education and/or make them salable as middle level human resource in the job market with a variety of accounting, banking and financial skills; &
  • To support students in possessing necessary knowledge, skills, attitude and other human qualities (i.e. honesty, trustworthiness, helpfulness, patience, hard-work, etc) which enable them to lead a responsible and dignified life in the society of any parts in the world they may settle in future.
Approaches to Education
Although we believe that education prepares people for better job and hence more respectable life, we value learning for life and life-long learning.  Therefore, we try to impart that type of education which supports children to grow up as a perfect individual. This obviously means that we teach students to promote the quality of their living; and we generally do not attach great significance to marks scored in written exams. Click to enlarge
This gives special attention to rigorous inspiration, facilitation, teaching, training, project works and mini research for producing competent junior-level practitioners and students interested in higher studies. Our academic programs focus on:
    • Provision of tutorial system in each subject teaching class to keep individual records of students. Assigned tutors are supposed to look after their educational, social and emotional well being throughout their study period.
    • Theoretical interactions programs and practices are regular.  Issues of contemporary global as well as local concern are also discussed from comparative perspectives.
    • Regular seminars, dialogues and interactions with key resource persons from respective areas help students develop deeper understanding and prepare them to face future challenges in the areas of management.
    • Field visits in many areas are indispensable parts of teaching. Realizing the necessity of field for on-the-spot study to materializing the theoretical knowledge, students are taken to different parts of Nepal each year.
    • Opportunities to teachers and administrative staff members for their professional development (through various trainings, workshops, academic degrees, etc.) in order to ensure that they embrace the changing and improved trends relating to their profession.
The school is gradually shifting to the student–centered teaching/learning activities.  Teachers encourage students to participate in teaching/learning process and their voices are heard and taken into account while making future plans and programs. Besides, audio-visual aids, power-points, multimedia projectors, charts, models, etc. are used to make learning and teaching more effective and purposeful.  While assigning a task to students faculty members ensure the purpose of the assignment and its contribution in promoting students’ critical and creative thinking.
Assessment and Evaluation
The student's progress in learning is assessed /evaluated on a regular basis. This is formally done in two ways. The first one is through written tests (taken at least three times a year) and the other is the continuous assessment system (classroom participation, homework, project work, assignment, sports and co-curricular / extra-curricular activities, etc).
Performance in SLC and HSEB Exams
From its inception in 1998 the school has strived for and maintained its academic standard. For example, the last six batches of the SLC and the two batches of Std 12 students who have so far graduated were able to show 100% pass rate.  More importantly their performance in the job market or in the higher education institutions of their choice is highly encouraging and a great number of students from the first & second batches of the SLC are to enter the wider society as a highly recognized professional, doctor, engineer, manager, teacher, school leader and so on.
Rules and Regulations
New members of staff or students are supported to become aware of school’s ‘Basic Rules’ which have to be respected and followed.  For new teachers, a mentor who is normally a senior and experienced teacher is nominated in order to support the new colleague(s) to adjust in the school environment whereas all students, whether new or old are guided, counseled and supported and at times sanctioned by the tutors concerned to obey the school rules. ‘The Prefect Council’ which consists of students as members and teachers as advisors supports teacher to oversee the implementation of school rules and regulations.  At times when a sanction has to be taken, utmost consideration of the context and the person(s) involved is taken seriously.  The school team believes that all students should be dealt as an individual.
Further details of the ‘Basic Rules’ you are kindly referred to the School Diary.
Plans for the future
The school is preparing itself to address two contradictory issues.  First, it has to prepare students to cope up with the rapid change and progress in science and technology and make them able to use the modern facilities available to improve their life (i.e. computer knowledge, managing information, etc.). Second it has to become considerate to the educational needs of the children who have been affected by the conflict that lasted for more than a decade.  As such our major thrust for the next few years will be in the following areas:
  1. Enhancing the quality of education we offer by using modern technology and equipments (i.e. computers, LCD projector, multimedia tools, etc.) and by offering adequate professional development programs to all staff members;
  2. Focusing on the student-centered and interactive approaches of teaching and learning (project work, field visits, etc.);
  3. Catering in the educational needs of greater number of children from the target group (i.e. children who have already lost the parental care &/or who are on the verge of losing it; and
  4. Strengthening current approach to inclusion so as maintain and consolidate social justice by taking in more children who are otherwise deprived of schooling & education due to financial or social reasons.
