SOS National Training Centre in Nepal lies in a small hilly town, Banepa, which is 30 Kilometers east of the capital city, Kathmandu. The construction work of the Training Centre was completed in March 2003 and from the same month it started its function. SOS National Training Centre in Nepal plans and prepares different programs for professional development of SOS Mothers, Teachers and other co workers working in different projects run by SOS Children's Village Nepal.

Philosophy and Goals
The trainings for SOS Mothers are designed on the basis of job description of SOS Mothers as described in the Mother Handbook. We expect the SOS Mothers to be independent, selfmotivated and self directed.Basic child care training for newly recruited mothers and refresher training for working mothers helps to equip with basic skills and knowledge required for professional mother and to develop positive attitude and behavior towards children

Basic Child Care Training
This training includes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for newly recruited mothers. The training is conducted totally in adult learning environment. The focus of the training is on: Concept & Principles of SOS, Child psychology, House management, Social education, Healthy and balanced food for children, Stages of Child development, Stress management, conflict management, communication and coordination with other SOS staff, Integration of child to the society etc. Duration of the training is 12 weeks. Various methods such as illustrated talk, group work, individual work, case study, role play, field visit (hospitals, child care organizations etc), individual and group presentation, brainstorming, group discussion etc are used to make the training effective. Each participant receives peer feedback and constructive feedback from the expert.
The Basic child care training course is recognized by the Government of Nepal.

Refresher Trainings
This is a compulsory training for SOS Mothers. SOS Mother being a core point in child care module of SOS Children's Villages; it is obvious to pay much attention in updating them with the changing situation. Moreover, SOS has put on much hope on mothers in rearing children in family atmosphere & upbringing them in a homely environment. To meet these expectations they need to be trained frequently to cope with the challenging job and develop professionalism on them.   • Enhance the professional skills of SOS Mothers.
  • Update the knowledge, ideas and skill of childcare.
  • Share experiences among the SOS Mothers.
  • Introduce SOS Mothers to the current institutional changes affecting their roles and performances as childcare professionals.
  • Refresh them in a new physical set up of living, completely away from tiresome day-to-day works.

In Nepal SOS is running 8 SOS Children's Villages. The Mothers and aunts of all the 8 villages are divided into 8 groups with 2 to 3 Mothers/Aunts from each village in a group. Every year we organize 4 groups of Refresher trainings so every mother/Aunt get a refresher training on alternate year.

Professional Development Programs for Teachers

Every year we run professional development programs for teachers working in 7 SOS Hermann Gmeiner Schools in Nepal. The main objectives of the trainings are to equip teachers with basic instructional skills and knowledge for planning and delivering individual teaching sessions with effective use of appropriate instructional media.
Workshops and Meetings
Every year separate or combined workshops and meetings of Village Directors, School Principals, and Youth Facility Directors/Counselors are organized The objectives of the workshop/Meetings are to offer opportunity to share professional experiences and expertiseamong participants,

make an assessment of the successes achieved, address issues and problems which have arisen while delivering professional responsibilities in the respective projects, and finally to set targets and make recommendations for the year to come. Focus of all these activities are on making the services of the organization more effective to the children and youths entrusted to its care.
Reunion workshop of Retired SOS Mothers
In the year 2006 and 2008 reunion workshops for retired mothers were organized which were enjoyed by all the participating retired mothers.
International Workshop
Apart from the regular program SOS National Training Centre has hosted programs like Asian Continental Navigators Meeting (August 2006), Continental level Workshop on Tracking Footprints (February 2007), International level Formal Education Policy Meeting (November 2007) and Continental level Child Protection Workshop (September 2008).
