SOS Children’s Village Itahari situated in Itahari Municipality opens its door in 1992. Since then it has been running the SOS village and other associated projects, which are brought into light here under the devastating earthquake of 1988 that caused the innumerable loss of life & property in eastern part of Nepal, left many children homeless and orphan. An immediate but long run attention towards such children as well as other abandoned and destitute children of this part was felt to be paid to take care of them.This was why the idea of the establishment of SOS Children's Village Itahari was conceived for the first time. Moved by the tragic fate fell upon those children The SOS Children's Village Switzerland brought a light of hope in those children for it was ready to extend its help to build an SOS Children's Village at Itahari. Consequently construction of the village started in 1988 and the first family moved to a house in 1992 |

SOS Children’s Village Itahari is comprised of 14 family houses which has been providing family care for 146 children. 87 boys and 59 girls having the age range of one year to sixteen years. They are being brought up with all the necessary standards required to become a successful self-sufficient citizens. 15 mothers, 5 aunts and other village co-workers are carrying out the team effort to care the children. |
| SOS Youth Facility Biratnagar |
| SOS Youth Facility Biratnagar is an ancillary project of SOS Children’s Village Itahari. SOS Youth Facility Biratnagar , located in Biratnagar ward no. 2 and 17, has been in operation since March 2001. |
| The facility consists of two separate homes for
SOS
Boys and Girls and being an extended program of
SOS
Itahari it provides necessary care, support and guidance to the youngsters shifted from the village. This facility is a transit home for the youngsters where they are prepared to their final integration into the society. At present there are 50 boys and 37 girls under the care of the Youth Facilities. |

| SOS Hermann Gmeienrr Higher Secondary School Itahari |

SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Itahari, located within the SOS complex at Itahari, is another project run under SOS Itahari. The school that provides quality education to the children both from the SOS Village and local community has been running classes from Nursery to class XI. Total 509 students are being taught in the light of latest and best possible way of teaching by a dedicated team of 33 teachers and 8 other staffs. |

| SOS Social Centre Itahari |
| SOS Social Centre corporately carries out majority community-based programs for the underprivileged families, children and women living in its vicinity. Here is the focus on its different projects separately: |
| 1. Day- Care Facility |
The Day care facility is typically operated for the children below four years from extremely poor families from around SOS Itahari. The poor working parents earning their daily meal leave their little kids in the day care centre for the whole day where they are cared by nurses and baby sitters. The Day care children are provided with nutritious meal, clothes, early childhood education as well as games and entertainment.The Day care children are given scholarship in different schools once they reach the schooling age. About 70 children are being cared at a time in this center. |
| 2.Medical Centre |
A well-equipped dispensary, in SOS Complex Itahari with two doctors' visit provides pre and post-natal care, Counseling to the children and pregnant women from the local communities. Doctors' visit and nursing care have been benefiting to the SOS children and outer community. Besides this it provides immunization, free distribution of contraceptives, sterilization service, and vaccination too. |
| 3.Skill Development Centre; |
Skill development centre caters a thorough six months training which assists the trainees to gain command over Cutting / sewing/ painting/ embroidery handloom and knitting. About 35 ladies from vicinities attend the training in each batch. |
| 4. Others: |
Apart from aforesaid projects and programs SOS Itahari has been supporting many fatherless families. They are being provided with monthly family budget and scholarship to the children at different schools in their respective villages. Similarly SOS Itahari has extended helping hand to many students for their schooling under scholarship scheme. |
Running on the 15th year of its establishment, SOS Itahari has become proven institution of hope to many needy children not only to the children living under its direct care but also to many other needy people of neighborhoods. Though SOS is extending help for the local communities, its main aim and goal is to up bring the orphan and abandoned children living in its family houses. Nobody in the society should forget that the children, being cared by SOS, are OUR CHILDREN. The organization has left no stone unturned to develop the children as a civilized and better citizen of our country. However it is the responsibility of every conscious citizen to contribute in the integration of the children. Therefore, SOS Itahari hereby makes a HUMBLE APPEAL to every citizen to extend helping hand, show concern and love, and give a feeling of belongings with security and opportunity to these children first. |
| Family Strengthening Program: |
Under this FSP, various outreach programs are run. Amongst them, Family support,(Prevention from child abandonment), Educational Scholarship, Housing, Micro Finance, Emergency Relief, etc. are the major activities. The detail is given in table 7.FSP has become one of the major programs of the village which has lessened the admission of children in the village. The number of beneficiaries will be increased in days to come. |
